Work Experience
The Master of Information Technology (Mainframe Computing) at the University of Canberra
is ground breaking in that no other program of study will give you the technical
competency needed for the demanding mainframe environment.
Those skills are in great demand in Australia and everywhere else in the world
that has IBM mainframes.
The conditions for International students to qualify for Permanent Residency in
Australia normally include a two-year program of study and relevant work experience.
You qualify for the period of study by taking the MIT (Mainframe Computing) over two years.
There are two opportunities for you to gain work experience leading to
Permanent Residency.
The first is in the fourth semester of the MIT (Mainframe Computing) program; top-performing students
will be selected for work experience with mainframe employers in Australia.
That experience will allow you to apply for Permanent Residency soon after graduation.
If you are not selected, you can apply for a further visa when you graduate that allows
you to stay in Australia for 18 months to pursue your career.
The selection for work experience will be based not only on academic ability,
but also your communication, presentation, and language skills. For that reason,
it is important that you continue to develop these skills over the duration of the
degree program. The University of Canberra will assist you with a program of
study that will help prepare you for the corporate environment.
GOL will assist you in preparing for all job interviews and will provide advice
on your visa application.
