  • This article in Computerworld was published when IBM released the z9 series of mainframe. The article is interesting because it points to the position of IBM mainframes in the market, that is, at the very top end of the architecture in terms of processing volumes. The organisations that continue to rely on mainframes are typically large transaction processing operations in banking and finance, government, and transportation.

  • This article from NetworkWorld in 2002 highlighted the severe shortage of mainframe skills that is starting to impact large organisations today. The available skills are ageing and will retire in significant numbers over the next decade. Some smaller organisations, like Boscov, have decided to move off the mainframe for this reason although larger organisations are not as flexible. This creates significant opportunities for anyone trained on large commercial systems.
